MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government has announced an indefinite extension of school holidays and all educational institutions across the region due to escalating security concerns along the Line of Control (LoC), officials confirmed on Sunday.
The decision comes in response to persistent ceasefire violations by Indian forces, usually during the nighttime, which have resulted in civilian casualties and posed significant risks to student safety. Heavy shelling in border districts over the past week has forced authorities to prioritise precautionary measures.
Considering these situations and the chance of harm to students and children if they come in contact with such objects, the holidays have been extended. The notification also suggests a complete search and sweep of the areas at risk.
The Civil Defence Department of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has received reports that during cross-border firing by India, some unexploded bombs (UXBs) have fallen in civilian areas along the Line of Control (LoC). These devices can remain dangerous for a long time and might explode if disturbed.
There can still be the presence of some unexploded bombs, toy bombs, which India tried to deploy in the region, or other suspicious items. The people are advised to stay away from suspicious things and inform the authorities if they encounter any such object.
To keep people safe, the Civil Defence Department advises the public not to touch or go near any suspicious objects, especially metal items or unexploded bombs. If someone sees something unusual, they should inform local authorities immediately.
The authorities have requested the office to spread this message to the public, especially in areas close to the LoC, through announcements, local leaders, and mosque loudspeakers. This is important to prevent accidents and save lives.
The notification regarding the extension of school holidays was signed by the Director General of Civil Defence of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
