NEW YORK (Kashmir English): WhatsApp has introduced a new security feature that allows users to set stronger passwords to provide additional protection for their accounts.
The platform said users can add a password by opening WhatsApp Settings, selecting Account, and then tapping the Password option.
The new feature also brings changes to WhatsApp’s existing two-step verification system. According to media reports, the traditional six-digit PIN is being replaced with a stronger password that can contain letters, numbers and special characters, making it more difficult to guess.
WhatsApp said the password adds an extra layer of protection against unauthorised access. However, setting a new password alone will not remove an intruder who has already gained access to an account, meaning users may need to recover the account first.
WhatsApp expands passkey security
WhatsApp has also expanded its passkey feature, allowing users to log back into their accounts using fingerprint authentication, Face ID or their phone’s screen lock.
The company said more than one billion people have already set up passkeys and that users will now be able to add multiple passkeys to a single WhatsApp account.
Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced Strict Account Settings, a feature aimed at users who may face sophisticated cyberattacks. It can silence calls from unknown numbers and automatically block media files and attachments sent by unfamiliar users.
WhatsApp has advised users never to share their passwords, registration codes or other sensitive account information with anyone. The company also recommends regularly checking the devices linked to their accounts for any unfamiliar activity.
