ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Pakistan has imposed restrictions on the import of camera-enabled Meta smart glasses over privacy and security concerns, particularly regarding their potential use in offices and workplaces.
According to details, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved restrictions on importing camera-equipped smart glasses, citing concerns about the possible misuse of recording technology in workplace environments.
The decision was taken during an ECC meeting chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb at the Finance Division on Wednesday.
The committee also recommended that provincial governments and the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) introduce appropriate regulations to govern the use of these devices in workplaces.
The proposed measures aim to address potential privacy and security risks associated with camera-enabled wearable technology.
However, the government has not yet clarified the full scope of the import restrictions, their implementation timeline or whether people who already own these smart glasses will be affected.
Meanwhile, the ECC has called on provincial administrations and ICT authorities to develop rules governing their use in offices and other professional environments.
