Pakistan-mediated US–Iran technical dialogue set for June 21 in Switzerland

BURGENSTOCK (Kashmir English): Technical-level talks between the US and Iran under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be held in Switzerland on June 21 under Pakistan’s mediation.

The Iranian delegation has left for Switzerland along with Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to discuss the details of the agreement reached with the US and its implementation.

President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner is already present, while special envoy Steve Witkoff is also about to arrive.

Pakistan Will Play a Mediating Role: Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The spokeperson of Foreign Affairs said that representatives of the United States and Iran will participate in the talks, and representatives of Pakistan and Qatar, who play a mediating role, will also participate in the talks.

The statement said that Pakistan will continue to facilitate this process as a mediator so that the agreements reached under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding can be taken forward and diplomatic progress between the two countries can be given practical form.

The spokesperson said that Pakistan will continue its constructive diplomatic efforts for peace, stability and peaceful resolution of conflicts in the region.

On the other hand, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has reached Tehran to make the Iran-US talks successful, where Mohsin Naqvi met with the Iranian Foreign Minister and discussed related matters.

Statement of Iran’s Foreign Ministry

According to Iranian news agencies Fars and Mehr, The Iranian spokesperson said that the main purpose of these talks in Switzerland is to find out how and when the US will fulfill its obligations under the agreement.

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that a clear procedure for implementing the agreement will also be determined in these talks and a timeline for the goals will be drawn up. He added that the Iranian delegation will clearly emphasize during the negotiations that the US will fully implement all the promises made in the interim agreement.

The Iranian spokesman warned that if the US refuses to implement its promises or violates the agreement, Iran will not remain silent.

He added that Iran will respond severely to any deviation by the US from fulfilling its obligations and will take necessary measures.

However, he did not specify the nature or details of possible measures that Iran may take in the event of US refusal.

Swiss Foreign Ministry Statement

The Swiss Foreign Ministry has officially confirmed that diplomatic contacts and negotiations between the two countries are continuing in the Bergenstock resort.

The talks are initially scheduled for a 60-day period, with the possibility of extension if necessary.

The Swiss Federal Foreign Office said in a statement on Saturday that the Bergenstock resort was serving as a “calm and reliable location” for the sensitive talks between the United States and Iran.

However, in keeping with traditional secrecy, Swiss officials have not yet provided any further details about the names of the participants in the talks or the key points under discussion.

Mohsin Naqvi Meets Abbas Araqchi

Moreover, the Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi discussed the regional situation during his meeting with the Iranian Foreign Minister.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited the Iranian Foreign Ministry during his visit to Iran, where he was warmly welcomed. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi welcomed Mohsin Naqvi upon his arrival at the Foreign Ministry.

The two leaders met in which the relations between Pakistan and Iran and the overall situation in the region after recent agreements were discussed in detail.

Issues related to bilateral cooperation, border issues and regional peace and stability came under discussion in the meeting. Both leaders expressed their determination to further strengthen the relations.
