ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has made it clear that the existing motorway speed limits will still be in effect, after social media reports have been circulated about the revival of old speed limits for cars and light transport vehicles (LTVs).
Several social media posts and reports in the past few days have reported that the government has brought back the 120 km/h speed limit for cars and LTVs on motorways, which has raised the expectations of motorway frequenters.
On the other hand, NHMP has announced that no implementation of any such decision has taken place in this regard and all existing speed limits are being maintained.
The decreased speed limits were set in March 2026 as a fuel conservation measure adopted by the government due to the rise in global oil prices. According to the new guidelines, the speed limit for cars and LTVs has been decreased from 120 km/h to 100 km/h, while the speed limit of passenger buses and heavy transport vehicles has been decreased from 110 km/h to 90 km/h.
This also functions as a reminder that traffic lawbreakers, including those involved in speeding, will still incur punishments according to the existing traffic rules on the motorways.
As of yet, there is no confirmation regarding the reinstatement of the 120 km/h speed limit for the motorways.
Federal Govt Abolishes Fuel-Saving and Austerity Measures
The federal government has abolished all fuel-saving and austerity measures implemented from March 9, 2026, after the US-Iran peace agreement was signed and the reopening of Starit of Hormuz.
According to the notification issued by the Cabinet Division, the national austerity measures will end immediately; however, restrictions related to market operating hours will remain in place.
Similarly, wedding halls and marquees will open until 10 pm, while restaurants, cafes, and food outlets will close at 11 pm. However, takeaway and home delivery services have been exempted from the ban.
Furthermore, the notification stated that pharmacies, hospitals, laboratories, medical stores, petrol pumps, CNG stations, and electric vehicle EV charging stations will also be exempted.
“Gyms, sports facilities, IT companies, and call centers will be exempted from the working hours restriction,” it added.
It further added that the market timing notifications issued on June 3 and 10 will remain in effect, while the austerity measures implemented before March 9, 2026, will remain in place.
