NOTTINGHAM (Kashmir English): New Zealand has crushed England by 160 runs in the third Test at Trent Bridge on Monday to seal a three-match series win.
Victory meant New Zealand won a three-match campaign 2-1 — just their fourth series success in England in 20 attempts — with the hosts bowled out for 212 after lunch on the fifth day chasing a target of 373.
This was also England’s first series defeat at home in three or more Tests since 2012.
England captain Stokes had stunned the cricket world on Sunday by announcing his retirement from international duty with more than a day of the series remaining.
The 35-year-old all-rounder said he felt “burnt out” after four years as England skipper, although Stokes added he would continue to play for county side Durham.
An injury-hit New Zealand attack was brilliantly supported in the field on Monday, Henry Nicholls and Mitchell Santner running out Joe Root and Josh Tongue respectively with direct hits.
Left-arm spinner Santner ended the match when he had Jamie Smith (60) caught in the deep by Nathan Smith.
