LAHORE (Kashmir English): Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz has been nominated for the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for the province’s “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” program.

According to the statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office, Maryam Nawaz will receive the award at a ceremony at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center in Muscat on the occasion of World Habitat Day.

Maryam Nawaz, while naming the award to the homeless people of Punjab, said that the ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar’ program is not only the best low-cost housing project in Pakistan but also in the world.

The “UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award” is the highest international award of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, which recognizes individuals, cities, governments and government agencies, civil society, private organizations, research institutes, and projects.

It is awarded keeping in mind the goals of affordable and most suitable housing, sustainable urban development, improvement of basic urban amenities, urban regeneration, better urban development, and natural disaster recovery programs.

Apart from Punjab, Myanmar, Brazil, Tunisia and London (England) have also been selected for the award.

The statement added that nearly 200 UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Awards have been presented in the past 37 years.

In Pakistan, the award was previously received by the Deputy Chairman of the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority in 2007.
