BIRMINGHAM (Kashmir English): Indian captain Shubman Gill became the first batsman in Test history to score 250 and 150 in the same match, and also propelling his team defeat England by a record margin.

His feat came as the tourists pressed for a series-levelling win at Edgbaston on Saturday.

The Indian captain followed his first-innings score of 269 with a superb knock of 161 off just 162 balls to amass 430 runs in the match. He now sits second behind Graham Gooch of England for the most runs by a batter in a single Test. Gooch had scored 456 against India in 1990.

Gill smashed Gavaskar’s 344-run record in a 1971 Test

Gill’s performance made him surpass Sunil Gavaskar’s 344 runs in a Test against West Indies in 1971 to make the Indian record his own.

Gill eventually declared the second innings on 427-6 after tea on the fourth day, leaving England needing a mammoth 608 runs to go 2-0 up in this five-match series.

No side in 148 years of Test cricket history have made more to win in the fourth innings than the West Indies’ 418 against Australia at St John’s in 2003.

England had scored 378 runs in the fourth innings of the Test match against India at Edgbaston in 2022.

At the end of the fourth day of the match on Saturday in Birmingham, England were 72-3, needing a further 536 runs on the final day to achieve a win.

Gill’s brilliant display finally ended when he gave a simple return catch to Bashir after having hit 13 fours and eight sixes in his latest performance.

India won the match by 336 runs in their first win at Edgbaston. The 336 margin of victory at Edgbaston is India’s biggest by runs away from home.

India’s win at Edgbaston is also the first time they levelled a series in England immediately after losing the first Test.
