ARLINGTON (Kashmir English): The United States and Iran can possibly meet at the 2026 FIFA World Cup but, at present, the scenario looks quite remote
As they are placed in different groups during the initial round of the tournament (USA in Group D and Iran in Group G), they cannot face each other in the group stage.
However, the meet is possible in any of the knockout rounds if both teams advance to the Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, or the Final.
The earliest possible matchup would be in the Round of 32. To make this clash happen, both teams must advance to the next stage.
The most direct scenario for a Round of 32 matchup requires both the USA to finish as runners-up in Group D and Iran to finish as runners-up in Group G.
If this happens, the match would be played at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas (Match 88 – Group D runners-up v Group G runners-up – Dallas Stadium on Friday, 3 July 2026).
The exact scenario depends on how these two groups shape up as the tournament progresses.
However, the USA has already topped the Group D with 6 points following wins against Australia and Paraguay.
Because the US won Group D and Iran is currently positioned for a 2nd or 3rd place finish in Group G, their immediate bracket paths currently do not intersect in the Round of 32.
Group G is incredibly tight after the opening matches, meaning any combination of teams could advance.
In Group G, New Zealand, Iran, Belgium and, Egypt all have one point each.
To arrange a Round of 32 clash with the USA, Iran needs to finish exactly second in Group G, while hoping the US team also dropped to second.

The most straightforward path to a meeting between the United States and Iran would come through the Round of 32.

If both outcomes occur, the two teams would face each other in the Round of 32 on July 3.
While the United States are considered among the favourites to win Group D, competition from Turkey could make a second-place finish a realistic outcome.
Iran, meanwhile, are viewed as outsiders behind Belgium and Egypt in Group G, but an upset victory could be enough to secure second place and set up a knockout encounter with the Americans.
Possible US-Iran meet in Round of 16
Another route exists, although it appears less likely.

Both nations win their Round of 32 matches
This would create a USA vs Iran showdown in the Round of 16.
The biggest challenge in this pathway is Iran topping a group that includes both Belgium and Egypt. Although not impossible, it would require the Asian side to produce one of the surprises of the tournament.
