ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday said that the government’s fuel subsidy programme will continue until the end of December, saying millions of people have benefited from the relief initiative so far.
He made the announcement while chairing a federal cabinet meeting, where he was briefed on developments relating to the economy, public relief, regional diplomacy and law and order.
“Around 15 million people have benefited from the fuel subsidy programme so far, with Rs28 billion spent on the initiative,” he said, adding that if there is a family of five, at least 75 million people have benefited.
Addressing the meeting, Sharif said petrol prices were expected to increase by Rs15 per litre due to rising prices in the international market.
However, he said the government had avoided passing the full burden on consumers by sharing the windfall profits of oil refineries.
