GUADALUPE, Mexico (Kashmir English): The Tunisia vs. Japan Group F fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup stands as the historic 1,000th match in FIFA World Cup history.
Both nations are set to meet on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico in the 1,000th match of the World Cup history.
The match serves as the second group-stage fixture for both nations in the expanded 48-team tournament.
Japan enters the clash in high spirits following a hard-fought 2–2 draw against the Netherlands in Dallas.
Tunisia, on the other hand, looks to bounce back from a heavy 5–1 opening defeat against Sweden.
The defeat prompted an immediate managerial shift, with the experienced Hervé Renard brought in to take charge of the team.
FIFA has organized special recognitions to honour nearly a century of tournament history since the inaugural World Cup in 1930.
Leading the officiating team is Romanian referee István Kovács, assisted by Mihai Marica and Ferencz Tunyogi.
Thirteen teams had participated in the tournament that kicked off 96 years prior. The Saturday’s game is also a World Cup rematch from 2002, where co-hosts Japan defeated Tunisia 2–0 in Osaka to advance to the knockout stage for the first time.
Special kit for the FIFA World Cup 1000th match
The match officials are wearing custom adidas uniforms featuring gold sleeve stripes and a unique “Match 1000” patch.
The encounter brings together Asian and African representatives in a fixture that suggests that the World Cup has grown far beyond its early European and South American dominance. Both teams head into the encounter with important points at stake in their second group game.
