MEXICO (Kashmir English): Japan produced a spirited comeback to hold the Netherlands to a thrilling 2-2 draw in one of the most entertaining matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage.

The high-profile encounter began cautiously, with the Dutch side enjoying the better of the first-half chances. Forward Donyell Malen repeatedly threatened the Japanese defense and forced goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into a series of impressive saves to keep the scores level before the break.

The match came to life in the second half when Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring in the 51st minute. The towering defender rose above the Japanese defense to head home a well-delivered cross from Ryan Gravenberch, giving the Dutch a deserved lead.

Japan responded almost immediately. Just six minutes later, Keito Nakamura unleashed a powerful strike that beat the Dutch goalkeeper and restored parity at 1-1, energizing both his teammates and the large contingent of Japanese supporters.

The Netherlands regained the advantage in the 64th minute through Crysencio Summerville, who produced a brilliant individual effort inside the penalty area before finding the back of the net to make it 2-1.

Despite falling behind for a second time, Japan continued to press forward in search of an equalizer. Their persistence paid off in the closing stages when Daichi Kamada rose highest to head home a crucial goal in the 88th minute, sparking jubilant celebrations among Japanese fans.

Neither side was able to find a winner in the remaining minutes, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

The result sees both Japan and the Netherlands begin their World Cup campaign with one point each, while the contest is already being hailed as one of the most exciting matches of the tournament’s opening phase.
