PESHAWAR (Kashmir English): Former ambassador Manzoor-ul-Haq has said that India has violated international agreements and World Bank guarantees by unilaterally suspending the Indus Waters Treaty.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Manzoor-ul-Haq in a media interview said repeated violations of the Indus Waters Treaty by India have jeopardized the credibility of international agreements and relations between states and that the fascist Modi government should be held accountable for this.

He said the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty by India in April last year has jeopardized the peace of South Asia and the effects of another war between the two nuclear powers, especially on the issue of water, will reach beyond the borders.

He warned that unilateral illegal actions on transboundary waters can lead to increased tension and pose threats to regional peace and stability.

Under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, Pakistan was given control over the waters of the western rivers, namely Indus, Jhelum and Chenab, and India over the eastern rivers, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej, he added.

India continuously violating Indus Waters Treaty

He said that India was continuously violating the Indus Waters Treaty, which could have consequences for regional stability.

He said that India’s recent illegal action was a clear example of using water as a weapon, to which Pakistan was constantly drawing the attention of the international community.

He said that India’s illegal actions had forced the Indus Water Commissioner to write a letter to his Indian counterpart seeking clarification on a key issue provided for under the Indus Waters Treaty.
