DHAKA (Kashmir English): Bangladesh has effectively removed the image of the country’s founding father and former president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, from new banknotes.

The move marks the first time in decades that the Bangladeshi notes no longer include portrait of any human figure.

The country released a new series of banknotes on Sunday that do not feature the image of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Departure from previous currency designs

The move also suggests a departure from previous currency designs, also marking the first major overhaul of banknote design following the establishment of the interim government, after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted. She has been living in exile in India.

According to spokesperson for Bangladesh’s central bank, Arif Hossain Khan, the new currency series no longer includes the portrait of any human figure.

Instead, the notes, he said, showcase historical landmarks, natural landscapes, temples, palaces and various elements of the country’s cultural heritage.

Out of the nine denominations planned, three have been issued so far, while the remaining to be released in phases. The authorities have made it clear that the existing banknotes and coins will continue to remain in circulation.

This is not the first time that political developments have influenced the design of Bangladeshi currency.

The first notes issued after independence in 1972 featured the map of the country. Later, the Awami League government added Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait to the design.

It is pertinent to note that daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina is currently living in exile in India.

She is facing legal proceedings in Bangladesh on charges of attempting to suppress a rebellion. Despite court orders, she has refused to return, and her political party, the Awami League, was officially banned last month.
