CALIFORNIA (Kashmir English): OpenAI has quietly introduced a major new feature for ChatGPT that allows uploaded files to be stored permanently in a dedicated library for future use.
The new feature is expected to significantly improve the user experience by turning ChatGPT into a more persistent AI workspace instead of a temporary chat-based tool.
Under the update, files uploaded to ChatGPT will no longer disappear after a conversation ends. Instead, they will be saved in a new library system, allowing users to access and reuse them in future chats.
The feature supports multiple file types, including spreadsheets, presentations, documents, and other uploaded content.
According to reports, ChatGPT will also be able to reference these stored files in future conversations and follow user instructions based on previously uploaded data.
Previously, uploaded files were automatically forgotten once a chat session ended. With the new system, ChatGPT can retain files in a dedicated storage area similar to cloud-based workspace services.
Storage Limits for Users
OpenAI has introduced different storage limits depending on subscription plans:
| Subscription Plan | Storage Limit |
|---|---|
| Free Users | 500 MB |
| Go Users | 4 GB |
| Plus & Business Users | 20 GB |
| Pro Users | 100 GB |
The new feature will allow users to store and revisit documents such as tax forms, resumes, recipes, presentations, notes, and work files directly within ChatGPT.
OpenAI is making the feature available on both the web version and mobile apps of ChatGPT.
Users will be able to manage uploaded files through a new “Storage” option in Settings, while a separate “Library” tab will appear alongside the Images section for viewing saved files.
Industry observers say the feature could position ChatGPT as a stronger competitor to productivity and cloud storage tools by integrating AI assistance with long-term document management.
