MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) Azad Kashmir has warned of an early monsoon this year, stating the possibility of more than normal rains in June.

The authority warned of the possibility of cloudbursts and flash floods in some upper areas of Azad Kashmir, including Neelum, Jhelum Valley district, and areas in Muzaffarabad district.

On Friday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) released its comprehensive weather outlook for the upcoming monsoon season in 2025, signalling a potential flooding in some regions to above-normal temperatures in others.

The Met Office predicted a more significant downpour in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and the northeastern areas of Punjab, where excessive rainfall is likely.

However, Normal or slightly above normal rainfall is anticipated for the central and southern parts of the country.

“The first part of the monsoon is particularly expected to bring heavy rains,” the meteorology department said.

PMD has also issued a stern warning regarding potential flooding due to the increased water levels in rivers from July to September.

The weather outlook stated that a notable increase in temperature in KP, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan may accelerate the rate of snowmelt, resulting in the rise of water level downstream.

The PMD urged authorities to activate emergency operation centres and ensure the deployment of rescue and relief teams in anticipation of the season’s challenges.

Earlier on Tuesday, three women lost their lives and a man went missing while several properties were damaged after a cloudburst-induced flash flood in Khaitar Bankhador and Balgran village of Muzaffarabad.
