AHMEDABAD (Kashmir English): South Africa Sunday defeated India by a big margin of 76 runs in their opening Super 8 match of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The high-stakes encounter was staged at the Narendra Modi Stadium here.
South Africa’s innings began in crisis as they were reduced to 20/3 within the first four overs by a lethal opening spell from Jasprit Bumrah, who finished with historic figures of 3/15.
However, the Proteas mounted a spectacular recovery behind a 97-run partnership between David Miller (63) and Dewald Brevis (45).
A late cameo by Tristan Stubbs (44)* which included two sixes off the final two balls, propelled South Africa to a competitive total of 187/7.
India’s chase never gained momentum as they lost wickets at regular intervals, falling to 51/5 by the 10th over. Despite a fighting 42 from Shivam Dube, the Indian batting lineup collapsed under pressure from Marco Jansen (4/22) and Keshav Maharaj (3/24), eventually being bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs.
India’s T20 World Cup qualification at stake
Having lost their first Super 8 game, India’s path to the semifinals has become significantly more difficult.
To stay in contention, India must now focus on their remaining Group 1 fixtures:
India vs. Zimbabwe: February 26, 2026, at 7:00 PM IST.
India vs. West Indies: March 1, 2026, at 7:00 PM IST.
India likely needs to win both remaining matches to secure a top-two finish in the group.
Because of the heavy 76-run defeat, India’s NRR has taken a massive hit.
Even if they win their next two games, they may need to win them by large margins to overcome South Africa or West Indies in a potential tie-breaker scenario.
If India loses one more match, they will likely need South Africa to win all their remaining games while hoping other results create a three-way tie at 2 points where NRR will decide the qualifier.
