ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The federal government is mulling over imposing a smart lockdown across the country to reduce fuel consumption amid rising prices of petroleum products.

According to sources, several proposals regarding the smart lockdown were reviewed at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

As per the proposal, government and private offices, schools, colleges, and universities may operate only four days a week, with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday proposed as weekly holidays.

A rotational work formula is also being considered for government employees. The proposal also includes grounding 50 per cent of government vehicles as part of the fuel-saving measures, sources said.

The government also considered the closure of markets for three days a week. A final decision regarding the smart lockdown is expected this evening, as per the sources.
