HARARE (Kashmir English): Zimbabwe’s veteran wicketkeeper-batter Brendan Taylor has surpassed Indian great Sachin Tendulkar to become the longest-serving player ever in men’s One-Day International (ODI) cricket.
Taylor achieved the milestone in the first ODI against Australia at the Harare Sports Club on Tuesday, breaking Sachin’s long-standing record to become the player with the longest career in men’s ODI.
The 40-year-old has extended his ODI career to 22 years and 146 days since making his debut in 2004. Tendulkar’s legendary ODI career spanned 22 years and 91 days between 1989 and 2012.
Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya is third on the list, with an ODI career spanning 21 years and 184 days from 1989 to 2011.
Pakistan’s legendary batsman Javed Miandad is at number four on this list, whose ODI career lasted 20 years and 272 days from 1975 to 1996.
Taylor, meanwhile, has established himself as one of Zimbabwe’s greatest cricketers.
He has so far scored 6,704 ODI runs from 205 innings, just 82 runs short of Andy Flower’s national record of 6,786 runs in 208 innings. He has also scored 11 ODI centuries, the most by a Zimbabwean.
