Pakistan shines with three bronze medals at Physics Olympiad

 BUCARAMANGA (Kashmir English): Pakistan has achieved another milestone in global science competitions by winning 3 bronze medals in the ‘56th International Physics Olympiad’ held in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

More than 400 students from more than 90 countries around the world participated in this prestigious global science competition, where Pakistani student demonstrated their scientific talents and problem-solving skills.

The students who won bronze medals for Pakistan include Zulfiqar Ali of Government City Boys School, DG Khan, Ali Hamdan Alvi of FG Sir Syed College, Rawalpindi, and Daniyal Shahzad Hamid of The Science School Rawat, Islamabad.

Apart from them, Haza Mahmood of Aitchison College Lahore and Abdullah Ijaz of Siddique Public School Rawalpindi also received ‘Honorable Mentions’ for their excellent performance in the competition.

The participants were selected for the competition through the 22nd National Science Talent Contest organized under the ‘STEM Careers Program’.

The program is a joint initiative of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIAS).

After a rigorous nationwide selection process, the students were placed in intensive residential training camps on the campus of PIAS University, where they were provided with cutting-edge theoretical and experimental training by national and international experts.

The Pakistani team in Colombia was led by PIAS University professors Dr. Muhammad Irfan and Dr. Muhammad Waseem.

Pakistan has been participating regularly in the International Physics Olympiad since 2001, the Mathematics Olympiad since 2005, and the Biology and Chemistry Olympiads since 2006.

Since the inception of the STEM Careers program, more than 365 Pakistani students have represented the country in international science Olympiads, winning a total of 144 medals.

In addition, more than 5,000 students have benefited from more than 256 advanced training camps set up under this program, which is a clear testament to the promotion of science education in the country.
