ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has expressed support for mediation efforts following an appeal from the Joint Public Action Committee and called on the committee to immediately announce the end of its sit-in.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman said in a video statement that the entire Pakistani nation and the Kashmiri people are currently extremely worried and anxious about the deteriorating situation in Azad Kashmir.
He said that the banned Joint Public Action Committee has appealed to me through a letter to play the role of mediator in this crisis.
Fazlur Rehman said that I have agreed to play this conciliatory role, keeping in mind the broader and best interests of Azad Kashmir and Pakistan.
He said that the protesters sitting on the sit-in are currently moving towards the next course of action, but it is obvious that I need some time for an effective mediation so that I can contact the government and start formal negotiations.
The JUI-F chief said that these are the first ten days of Muharram, which are very sacred, respectful, and sensitive for all Muslims. On such an occasion, I consider it necessary that the Joint Public Action Committee immediately end its sit-in in the first phase and not move towards any further course of action that will further worsen the situation.
He said that ending the sit-in will provide us with a way to bring the government and the committee leadership to a single agreed position and make progress towards a peaceful solution.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that I appeal to the government and the Joint Public Action Committee to soften their attitudes and show willingness to hold talks to resolve the crisis.
Maulana said that I am conveying this message to both parties with a good hope so that the environment can be completely conducive for the next steps.
The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam chief has finally once again called the cancellation of the sit-in the first step.
