MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain in several parts of the country today, including Kashmir, Islamabad, upper Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Light showers were reported in parts of Karachi last night, offering temporary relief from the ongoing heat.

According to the Met Office, heavy rain is also expected in some areas of Sindh and Balochistan. The heaviest rainfall during the past 24 hours was recorded in Murree, where 48mm of rain was noted.

In response to the forecast, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of KP has issued a weather alert for heavy rain from July 5 to July 11. The warning highlights the risk of flooding in rivers, including the Chitral River, Swat River, Panjkora River, and Kabul River. People living near these rivers have been advised to take precautions and stay updated on weather developments.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, especially in hilly and river-adjacent areas, where heavy rain may lead to flash floods, landslides, and road blockages. The NDMA has instructed local administrations to stay prepared for emergency response efforts.

The Meteorological Department has advised travellers and residents in vulnerable areas to avoid unnecessary movement and remain alert. Emergency hotlines have been set up in several districts, and rescue teams are on standby in case of worsening conditions.

Heavy rain may cause floods

In Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, there is a risk of floods due to glacial lake outbursts, landslides, and floods in low-lying areas.

Urban flooding is expected in Lahore, Sialkot, and Narowal, while increased water flow is anticipated in the hill torrents of D.G. Khan and Rajanpur.

The NDMA has advised general public to stay away from weak constructions, mud walls, electricity poles, and billboards during rain and strong winds.

It further said that visibility may also decrease during dust storms which can cause accidents. Water flow in local streams and nullahs can suddenly increase due to rains, the alert said warning residents to be cautious.

The NDMA has issued instructions to all concerned departments to ensure that proactive measures are taken to deal with any potential emergency.
