PESHAWAR (Kashmir English): Rumours suggesting that a state of emergency is being imposed across Pakistan are “entirely false and fabricated,” according to a statement attributed to government sources, which said no such proposal is currently under consideration.
The sources said that any constitutional options being examined are strictly limited to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, amid growing concerns over the province’s law-and-order and governance situation.
According to the statement, the federal government is questioning how long the existing situation in KP can continue, alleging that the provincial government led by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has disengaged from efforts against terrorism and failed to maintain effective governance.
The statement further alleged that the provincial government has shown insufficient attention to law and order, while the security situation in KP continues to deteriorate.
The claims come amid an ongoing political dispute between the federal and KP governments over security policy and responsibility for counterterrorism.
CM Sohail Afridi has previously argued that force alone cannot ensure lasting peace and has blamed federal policies and delayed war-on-terror funds for worsening security conditions.
The statement stressed that reports of a nationwide emergency should not be confused with the constitutional options reportedly being considered in relation to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
