KABUL (Kashmir English): Five years after the Taliban takeover in 2021, Afghanistan is facing a worsening humanitarian, economic, and governance crisis, with analysts describing the situation as “control without governance” amid rising poverty, insecurity, and international isolation.

According to recent assessments, the country’s economy has failed to recover from the sharp contraction that followed the regime change. Afghanistan’s gross domestic product shrank by nearly 25–30 percent between 2021 and 2023 and has since stagnated, with annual growth hovering at just 1 to 2 percent through 2025–26.

The economy remains significantly below its pre-2021 level, with GDP estimated at around $14–15 billion compared to $20.1 billion before the Taliban returned to power.
