GILGIT (Kashmir English): The Gilgit-Baltistan elections will be held tomorrow, for which arrangements and preparations have entered the final stages.
There are a total of 33 seats in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, including 24 general seats on which voting will be held tomorrow. 6 seats in the assembly are for women while 3 seats are reserved for technocrats.
After the election results, any party or alliance will need the support of 17 seats to form the government in order to obtain a simple majority and form the government.
Two-day public holiday announced in Gilgit-Baltistan
Earlier, The Gilgit-Baltistan government on Thursday announced a two-day public holiday across the region ahead of the general election on June 7.
According to the notification, June 5 and 6 (Friday and Saturday) will be observed as public holidays throughout Gilgit Baltistan in pursuance of the Gilgit Baltistan Assembly General Elections 2026.
“However, departments/organizations rendering essential services shall continue to function in accordance with their operational requirements,” it stated.
The holidays were declared to facilitate the smooth conduct and preparation of the polling arrangements for the electoral process. The polling day is scheduled for Sunday, June 7.
The official said that government schools and colleges across the region will remain closed on both days as most educational institutions have been designated as polling stations for the upcoming elections.
Necessary preparations, including the establishment of polling stations and deployment of election staff, are underway across Gilgit-Baltistan.
The elections are scheduled to be held amid heightened administrative preparations, with authorities aiming to ensure transparent and peaceful polling throughout the region.
