RAWALAKOT (Kashmir English): Department of Sports, Youth & Culture, Azad Kashmir, has announced the second edition of “Kashmir Marathon”, which will be held in Rawalakot on July 27, aimed at promoting health, tourism, and cultural exchange.
The Secretary Sports AJK, Tehzib-ul-Nisa, said that the marathon will start and end at the historic Eidgah Ground in Rawalakot, covering a scenic route that includes Khaigala and Chhotagala. The deadline for registration for the Kashmir Marathon is set for July 18.
“This time, international athletes will also participate in this marathon along with local and national-level runners,” the secretary told reporters during a media briefing, along with Commissioner Poonch Masood-ur-Rehman and the Marathon Organizing Committee.
Last year, approximately 300 athletes from all over Azad Kashmir and Pakistan participated in the inaugural event; however, only 160 participants completed the race.
“People of all ages will be able to participate in different categories of the marathon, and prizes will be given to the winners,” she announced, adding that a family walk will also be organized for women and children.
Tehzib-ul-Nisa said that the Kashmir Marathon aims to promote healthy activities, create awareness against drugs, and promote tourism by bringing the beauty of Azad Kashmir to the world.
She said that this event is expected to boost the local economy and promote eco-tourism. Furthermore, cultural stalls will also be set up along the route of the marathon to highlight the culture of the region.
Secretary Sports stated that, along with traditional sports, new sports will also be promoted next year.
Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Poonch said that all departments are working together to ensure the success of the Kashmir Marathon, which is expected to draw large participation.
“The departments of Sports, Administration, Police, Rescue, Public Health, Education, and Information are collaborating to make the event a success,” he said.
He said that the marathon will feature traditional sports like tug-of-war and Gatka, with competitions to be held alongside the main event. The organizers have appealed to the public to participate in large numbers and make the event a memorable one.
