RAWALPINDI (Kashmir English): The Punjab government has acquired 87 new electric buses from China to provide citizens of the twin cities Rawalpindi and Islamabad with affordable yet modern travelling facilities.

The air-conditioned buses equipped with Wi-Fi, Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking, and mobile charging ports, have already arrived in Rawalpindi.

The project will cover an extensive length of 84 kilometers across the twin cities.

According to media reports, construction work has already begun at the former Government Transport Service (GTS) station while charging stations are yet to be constructed across various locations in the city.

Senior citizens aged above 60 can avail the facility free of cost, while normal fare has been set at Rs20 per ticket.

Electric buses would be launched in phases

The electric buses would be launched across four routes in phases. The first phase will operate from Rawat to Motorway Chowk, providing citizens with a comfortable experience.

The project was supposed to be inaugurated on October 15 by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, but it was delayed due to the unrest by protests across Punjab.
