UNITED NATIONS (Kashmir English): A senior Pakistani delegation, led by PPP Chairman and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, gave a detailed briefing to members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the United Nations.
The Pakistani parliamentary delegation briefing focused on the rising tensions in South Asia following India’s military actions and its unproven claims against Pakistan after the recent Pahalgam incident.
Speaking to the OIC Permanent Representatives, Bilawal firmly rejected India’s attempt to blame Pakistan for the Pahalgam incident without any proper investigation or evidence.
According to a statement from Pakistan’s Mission to the UN, he warned that such rushed allegations were being used as an excuse for unlawful military operations, including cross-border attacks that harmed civilians and damaged non-military structures.
He said he was deeply concerned that India had withdrawn from the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, seeing it as a dangerous move that threatened to apply water as a means of pressure.
The Pakistani delegation said such an action is a direct violation of Pakistan’s international commitments and warned that Pakistan cannot allow such actions to become routine. Bilawal said India’s aggressive approach was making the world a more dangerous place and threatening the already fragile peace in South Asia.
Bilawal thanked OIC member countries for their role in easing tensions and promoting calm and dialogue. Pakistani delegation also emphasised that true peace can only be achieved through communication and diplomacy.
Repeating Pakistan’s commitment to peace and responsible conduct, he called for a return to the Indus Waters Treaty, full respect for the ceasefire, and a renewed effort for broad-based talks with India, with a lasting solution to the Jammu and Kashmir issue at the centre.
The head of the Pakistani delegation described the OIC as the moral voice of the world during these troubling times. He expressed deep appreciation to the OIC member states for standing by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He urged continued support for the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination, a right granted under UN Security Council resolutions.
OIC officials thanked Pakistan for its open and prompt update and said they continue to support Pakistan and the people of Kashmir. The OIC and Pakistani delegation held concerned discussions about increasing security threats in South Asia and stress placed on the obligation to defend the principles in the UN Charter and international law, particularly observing the Indus Waters Treaty.
OIC states showed appreciation for Pakistan’s resolve to address disputes, through peaceful means, including the Jammu and Kashmir issue, in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
