ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): India has opted not to send a high-level official delegation to Tehran to attend the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The funeral ceremony is being held in the Iranian capital, with delegations from several countries, including Pakistan, Qatar, and Egypt, attending to pay their respects.
According to reports, India is being represented by a lower-level delegation led by Bihar Governor Syed Atta Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, rather than by senior members of the Modi government.
The decision has drawn attention in regional media. The Wire noted that New Delhi’s level of representation comes as India continues to balance its diplomatic ties with both Iran and Israel.
According to the report, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision not to attend Ali Khamenei’s funeral reflects India’s growing distance from Iran, while New Delhi still claims to adhere to Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar’s multilateral principles.
