PM Shehbaz, Field Marshal attend late Ayatollah Khamenei’s funeral ceremony in Tehran

TEHRAN (Kashmir English): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, along with a high-level Pakistani delegation, on Friday participated in the funeral ceremony of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran today, state-run Radio Pakistan reported.

The late Supreme Leader embraced martyrdom on February 28, 2026, in an Israeli-US attack on Iran. His body, along with those of his companions, was transferred to Tehran’s Grand Mosque early Friday ahead of his funeral.

Iranian officials said that delegations from nearly 100 countries, along with public figures and civil society groups, would attend the farewell ceremony for the martyred Leader.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif attended the funeral of the late Supreme Leader upon the invitation of Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian.

After attending the funeral ceremony, the Prime Minister, who had arrived in Tehran earlier today, departed for Istanbul for his official visit to Turkiye, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces paid their respects to the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and offered fateha for the departed soul. They also extended their condolences to the Iranian leadership, including President Masoud Pezeshkian.

“On this solemn occasion, the Prime Minister recalled the lasting contributions of the late Supreme Leader for Islam. He paid rich tribute to the late Supreme Leader, who guided the Iranian nation for decades, with remarkable wisdom and sagacity,” the PMO said.

Moreover, the statement added that the Prime Minister expressed full solidarity with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, and the brotherly people of Iran in this moment of national grief and prayed to Allah Almighty for the forgiveness of the departed leader.

The delegation included Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PPP Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, and Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah.

PM, Field Marshal reaches Tehran

Earlier today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir separately landed in Tehran to attend the funeral of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iranian senior civil-military officials, including the Minister of Defense and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who had already reached Tehran, warmly welcomed Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with a high-level delegation, also arrived in the Iranian capital for a one-day visit to attend the funeral ceremony of Khamenei, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement.

During his stay in Tehran, Prime Minister Shehbaz will participate in the last rites of the late Iranian Supreme Leader, the PMO added.

“He will express heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Pakistani people and government to the Iranian leadership and bereaved families, and reaffirm Pakistan’s complete solidarity with the brotherly Iranian nation in this hour of grief,” the statement added.

The prime minister was accompanied by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PPP Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and parliamentarians.

Upon his arrival at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport, the prime minister was received by Iranian Minister for Interior Eskandar Momeni, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, and senior diplomatic officials from both countries.

Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani also arrived in Tehran with a high-level delegation to attend the funeral prayers and burial earlier in the day.
