Intense heatwave claims 10 lives in Karachi in a single day

KARACHI (Kashmir English): At least 10 bodies were recovered from different parts of Karachi on Monday as the port city endured intense heat, recording its hottest day since 2018.

According to Chhipa Foundation spokesperson, four of the deceased were found in a critical condition and died during treatment, while the bodies of six others were recovered from homes, mosques, and other locations across the city.

He said an unidentified man’s body was found near Saima Arabian Villas in the Manghopir area. Another body was recovered near Noor Hotel in Gulshan-i-Hadeed area.

A man was found dead in Defence Phase VIII while a person found in a critical condition at Boat Basin in Clifton later died during treatment.

The spokesman further said that a man found in a distressed state beneath the Liaquatabad No. 10 bridge succumbed to his condition while under treatment.

Another individual, discovered near Jamali Bridge on the Super Highway, also died during treatment,” the Chhipa spokesman added.

He also confirmed another death in Surjani Town, where, he said, a man who had been found in a critical condition passed away while receiving medical care.

Separately, the authorities recovered a body near Tayyaba Mosque on Sparco Road in Baldia Town. The deceased was identified as 55-year-old Abdul Wadud.

Furthermore, a 70-year-old man identified as Zaheer was found dead at a home near Mauripur Nala Stop. The exact cause of death could not be immediately ascertained, though heat-related complications are suspected.

In North Karachi’s Sector 5-D/3, Edhi officials said, the body of a man was found inside Usmania Mosque as he had come to offer prayers and died on the spot.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths caused by the intense heat and other factors in Karachi. He directed his administration to quickly identify the bodies found in various areas and locate their families.

Hottest day in Karachi since 2018

On Monday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Karachi recorded its hottest day since 2018, as the temperature in the city surged past 44°C.

In May 2018, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 46°C, while the highest temperature ever documented in the month of May dates back to 1938, when the mercury soared to 48°C, according to the Met Office.
