JEDDAH (Kashmir English): A team selected and trained by the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) under the auspices of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) has secured one gold and two silver medals at the 3rd International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO-2026) held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 2 to 8.
Around 120 students and experts from 19 different countries including China, Japan, Russia, Türkiye, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia took part in the competition under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Pakistan’s Muhammad Ali, a student of Government College University Lahore, won the gold medal in the event whereas two other Pakistani students, namely Muhammad Usman from FG Sir Syed College, The Mall, Rawalpindi and Seerat Fatima Bhatti from Naxar College, Karachi won silver medals.
Syed Shuja Haider of Sundar STEM School, Lahore, was also among those who represented Pakistan in the international event.
The selection of these students for the competition was based on the Pakistan Nuclear Science Olympiad (PANSO), a key project of PAEC focused on the identification and nurturing of scientific talent in the country.
The selection procedure was jointly carried out by the Directorate of Education, PAEC Headquarters, and PIEAS. The selected students were then trained and guided by distinguished teachers and experts at PIEAS in order to prepare them for the challenge and competition of the International Olympiad.
International Nuclear Science Olympiad
International Nuclear Science Olympiad is a well-known contest for high school students in the area of nuclear sciences. It is organized with the purpose of promoting excellence in the sciences of nuclear and peaceful applications of nuclear sciences and technologies, knowledge sharing and international cooperation in the field.
It gives young students the chance to showcase their academic skills and expertise in the field of nuclear sciences.
The success shows that Pakistan is making efforts to promote young scientific talents and encourages them to seek education and careers in the field of nuclear sciences and technologies.
Through its programs like PANSO and institutions such as PIEAS, PAEC gives talented students training, mentoring and chances to compete in international scientific forums.
In another significant development, Pakistan has been selected to host the 4th International Nuclear Science Olympiad in 2027.
The event witnessed an unveiling of a commemorative souvenir from Dr. Muhammad Maqsood from the Directorate of Education, PAEC, and Dr. Sajjad Tahir of PIEAS, in honor of the selection of Pakistan as the host nation of the upcoming Olympiad.
The selection of Pakistan as the host nation signifies the increasing importance of Pakistan in educating about nuclear science.
