ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Prices of chicken have risen once more as a result of the decision by the Market Committee to increase the official price of broiler meat by Rs. 15 per kg.
As per the recent price list issued officially, the official price of broiler meat has been fixed at Rs. 483 per kg. The wholesale price of live broiler chicken has been fixed at Rs. 319 per kg, while the retail price is Rs. 333 per kg.
But despite the changes in the official rates, there have been complaints of overcharging in many shops in the city, as many retailers are selling broiler meat at prices much higher than the official price fixed by the government.
There have been allegations that shopkeepers do not adhere to the official price list and charge their customers far more than the officially fixed prices.
Another point worth mentioning here is that the price of farm eggs has gone up. The official price has been increased by Rs. 1 per dozen, resulting in the official price of Rs. 234 per dozen.
In a period where consumers are facing issues with the increasing prices of food items and other necessities, the recent price hikes of poultry come at an inconvenient time. Several consumers have called upon the government to take stricter measures by conducting market raids against vendors who violate the government-set prices.
Given the fact that chicken has always been one of the most commonly eaten sources of protein in the country, the current price increases will only make matters worse.
