ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoIT) on Friday said it has initiated the process to withdraw the controversial telecommunication bill, pertaining to amending laws regarding the installation of telecom infrastructure on public and private land, from the Senate.
In a statement, the ministry stated that it would introduce a new draft of the proposed legislation.
The proposed legislation, Pakistan Telecommunication Amendment Bill 2026, had been approved earlier by the National Assembly on June 11, but faced objections about its clauses after being taken up by the Senate.
According to the ministry, the stipulated 90-day period for the bill was approaching completion.
“Upon expiry of the prescribed period, the Bill would have proceeded to a joint sitting of Parliament, the convening of which may not take place in the near future.”
In order to avoid delays and expedite the legislative process, the ministry has decided to introduce a fresh Bill, ensuring that the legislative process proceeds in a timely and effective manner while retaining the essence of the proposed legislation, the ministry added.
