CALIFORNIA (Kashmir English): The National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT) has issued an advisory, warning of a surge in phishing and hacking attacks on WhatsApp, urging special vigilance for messages received from unknown numbers.
Phishing is a kind of cybercrime where malicious actors attempt to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information, such as credit card details, login credentials, or personal data, by impersonating trusted entities.
This is typically performed through deceptive messages, emails, or websites that appear legitimate but are designed to steal information or spread malware.
The advisory said that cybercriminals are attempting to deceive users into sharing personal information through fraudulent methods.
The advisory further said that hackers use fake links and counterfeit verification codes to trick users.
Then hacked accounts may be used to spread misinformation, commit fraud, or gain unauthorized access to private photos and contact lists.
The NCERT advisory further warned that hackers are using fake bank loyalty programs and prize offers as bait for attacks.
Security in WhatsApp settings
The NCERT also cautioned about deceptive schemes urging users to enable two-step verification for added security in WhatsApp settings.
WhatsApp users have been advised to avoid opening links related to address verification, rewards, or surveys and to verify messages only through official and authenticated sources.
