ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The federal government has proposed to allocate Rs3,000 billion for the defence budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, which is about 18 percent more than the revised defence budget of the current fiscal year.
Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, while presenting the federal budget in the National Assembly, also presented the details of the funds allocated for defence and national security before the house.
According to the budget documents, the defense expenditure for the new fiscal year has been estimated at Rs3,000 billion, which is about Rs450 billion more than the revised Rs2,595 billion for the current fiscal year.
The government has linked this increase to the regional security situation, defense needs, and the need to maintain the operational capability of the armed forces. The defence budget constitutes about 15 percent of the total federal budget.
According to the budget documents, it has been proposed to allocate Rs1,284 billion for the Pakistan Army in the new fiscal year.
Rs573 billion has been allocated for the Pakistan Air Force. Rs293 billion is proposed to be allocated for the Pakistan Navy.
In comparison, during the current fiscal year, Rs 1,184 billion was allocated for the Pakistan Army, Rs 520 billion for the Pakistan Air Force, and Rs 273 billion for the Pakistan Navy.
According to the documents, Rs 967 billion has been proposed for the salaries, allowances, and other related expenses of defense employees in the new fiscal year.
In the current fiscal year, Rs 846 billion was allocated for this purpose, while according to the revised estimates, this amount has reached Rs 851 billion.
The government has proposed to allocate Rs 743 billion for the operational expenses of defense institutions in the new fiscal year.
In the current fiscal year, Rs 704 billion was kept for this purpose, while according to the revised estimates, these expenses reached Rs 721 billion.
According to the budget documents, Rs 7.95 billion was allocated for defense administrative expenses in the current fiscal year, which later became Rs 11.74 billion after revision.
Rs 10.9 billion has been proposed for administrative expenses for the fiscal year 2026-27.
