MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): The High Court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Monday abolished the quota system for admissions to government jobs and professional institutions.
High Court Judge Justice Sardar Ijaz Khan, while consolidating various cases, pronounced the verdict. According to the High Court orders the appointments and admissions of all applicants will be based on open merit.
The court ruled that the quotas for government jobs (journal and non-journal), refugees and regional quotas, medical colleges, and other professional institutions are a violation of fundamental human rights.
Accordingly, the court ordered that all appointments and admissions must be made only on open merit from now onwards.
After the verdict was pronounced, petitioners and senior lawyers Raja Amjad Ali Khan Advocate, Haroon Riaz Mughal Advocate, Raja Fayyaz Khan Advocate, and Zeeshan Advocate told Kashmir Digital that the writ petitions against the quota system were pending for more than a year.
The court, after consolidating all the cases, pronounced the reserved verdict and abolished the quota system.
