ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Following reports of severe cold in Pakistan this year, the Meteorological Department has issued a clarification saying that claims of extremely cold weather in the country are baseless.

According to the Meteorological Department, rainfall is likely to be normal or slightly less than normal in most parts of the country from December to February.

The agency said that the passage of westerly winds in some areas may temporarily increase the cold, but this is part of normal weather conditions and does not mean that the entire country will experience severe or record-breaking cold.

A few days ago, international meteorological experts had predicted that Pakistan will witness severe cold this year after decades and had said that this unusual cold would be due to the rare weather phenomenon “La Niña”.

After this news, public concern spread, but the Pakistan Meteorological Department rejected this prediction and said that there are no signs of unusual or record-breaking cold in the country this year.

The Meteorological Department clarified that the temperature is likely to be slightly above normal in Punjab and Sindh from December to February, while snowfall may be less than normal in the northern and western mountainous areas.

Overall, mild or moderate cold is expected in the country and there are no signs of severe cold or severe weather in any area.

The department has asked the public to get information about weather conditions only from reliable sources and not to believe in unscientific news or rumors.

According to the Meteorological Department, unverified news can cause unnecessary concern among the public, so it is necessary that people do not take news from social media or unauthentic sources seriously.

This clarification by the Meteorological Department has come at a time when Pakistan is among the countries severely affected by climate change and in the past few years, torrential rains, cloudbursts and devastating floods have affected the country’s economy and the lives of the people.

According to the organization’s recent report, there are no signs of unusually cold weather in the country this winter, but the public can expect moderate and normally cold weather.
