LAHORE (Kashmir English): The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast mild heatwave conditions across the southern parts of Pakistan from April 29 to May 3, which raises concerns because daytime temperatures will increase in regions that already experience high temperatures.
According to the latest weather advisory, southern Punjab, Sindh, and southern and eastern Balochistan are likely to experience significantly high temperatures, with mercury levels expected to climb well above seasonal averages.
The PMD reported that a westerly wave system will affect the upper regions of the country from April 27 until April 29 and again from May 3 until May 5, which will cause temporary temperature decreases of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in northern areas.
The PMD monitors atmospheric conditions as they develop because it will provide updates if the heatwave becomes more intense or reaches new areas. The department stated that it will provide updates when a potential heatwave develops.
The department warned that El Niño conditions will likely emerge between May and July, which will increase regional temperatures. PMD officials showed that May and June represent the hottest months in Pakistan because southern regions endure extreme heatwaves during this period.
Typical temperatures in heat-prone areas range between 43°C and 45 °C. During extreme heatwaves, temperatures may rise to 52°C. Current readings are already 2–4°C above normal levels.
El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon that causes ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific to increase, resulting in global weather pattern disruptions that affect rainfall and temperature extremes.
