MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): An interesting situation developed at the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (UAJK), Muzaffarabad when the students took away ballot boxes meant for the academic staff elections, just to record their protest against the ban on student unions in educational institutions.

A group of boys stirred concern among the university administration when they said if student union elections cannot be held in educational institutions, then no other electoral activity is acceptable.

The University’s City Campus team, comprising Ibrahim Habib Mir, Faheem Bhaiya, Chaudhry Faisal, Ahmed Gilani, Chaudhry Danish, Chaudhry Saqib Siraj, Waleed Inqilabi, and Saqib Javed, fled away with the polling boxes during the academic staff elections, which were being held after four years.

The students said that organizations are a routine in all government institutions. Lawyers, traders, and people from all walks of life have formed their own organizations, but if there is a ban, it is on students.

“Under the circumstances, we will not let the university elections held,” they warned.

However, after a long negotiation process between the VC of Azad Kashmir University, the faculty, and the students, the students returned the ballot boxes.
