Johannesburg (Kashmir English): South Africa’s national freight rail operator, Transnet Freight Rail, has set a new world record by running a 7.6-kilometer-long, 696-wagon empty freight train.

Transnet Freight Rail set the world record by successfully operating the world’s longest freight train across an 861-kilometer iron ore line.

The record-breaking train measured 7.6 kilometres in total and comprised 696 empty freight wagons, several locomotives and crew coaches.

The freight train ran along the country’s iron ore export line between the port of Saldanha and the mines in the Northern Cape.

Australia freight train record

Australia previously held the record, having operated a freight train with 682 wagons in 2001.

According to Railway officials, controlling a train of this length through a balanced braking and power system demonstrated the country’s advanced engineering and operational capabilities.
