MUMBAI (Kashmir English): In the second ODI, India handed a historic defeat to the West Indies by successfully chasing down a massive target of 406 runs, courtesy of an unbeaten double century by captain Shubman Gill, thereby clinching the three-match series 2-0.
In this record-breaking ODI played in Guwahati, hosts India won the toss and invited the West Indies to bat first.
Batting first, the West Indies posted a mammoth total of 405 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs, driven by centuries from three of their batters. This stands as the West Indies’ highest-ever total in ODI cricket.
For the West Indies, John Campbell, captain Shai Hope, and Amir played innings of 101, 104, and 114 runs, respectively.
For India, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Gurwar Brar claimed two wickets each, while Prasidh Krishna took one.
In reply, the Indian team chased down the target of 406 runs in 43.3 overs for the loss of just two wickets.
Indian captain Shubman Gill scored the fastest double century in ODI cricket history; he remained unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls, an innings that included 8 sixes and 26 fours.
Rohit Sharma also provided solid support to Shubman Gill, scoring 101 runs off 75 balls before getting out. The two openers established a magnificent 255-run partnership for the first wicket.
Additionally, Virat Kohli was dismissed after scoring 29 runs, while Ruturaj Gaikwad remained unbeaten on 31.
For the West Indies, Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales claimed one wicket each.
With this victory, India has become the second team—after South Africa—to successfully chase down a target of over 400 runs.
