Rawalpindi, Islamabad face flood risk as Nala Lai rises

ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Heavy rain in Rawalpindi and Islamabad triggered warning sirens around Nala Lai as water levels rose sharply, prompting authorities to issue safety warnings to residents.

Rainfall of 66 mm was recorded in Saidpur, 52 mm in Golra, 65 mm in Bokra, 63 mm in Pirodhai, 47 mm in Chaklala and 50 mm in Shamsabad.

For the third consecutive day, heavy rainfall caused flooding in Nala Lai, with the water level at Katarian exceeding 22 feet. According to the administration, the water level at the Gowalmandi Bridge has reached 16 feet.

Warning sirens were sounded around Nala Lai as authorities monitored the situation. Rescue 1122 teams have also started making announcements, urging citizens to remain cautious.

Rescue officials advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel while water levels remain high. They also urged people to keep children away from rainwater drains and electric poles to prevent accidents.

The Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert for upper and central parts of the country until Friday. Rain is expected in Islamabad, upper Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.

According to the Flood Forecasting Division Lahore, low-level flooding has been reported in the Indus River at Kalabagh, Chashma, Taunsa and Guddu Barrage. The situation in other major rivers across the country remains normal.
