ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The federal government has declared Wednesday, May 28, a public holiday to observe Youm-e-Takbeer. An official notification in this regard has been issued.

Last year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally announced May 28 as a public holiday to honour Pakistan’s unwavering defence capabilities.

A day earlier, the Sindh government also declared May 28 a public holiday to mark Youm-e-Takbeer, which commemorates Pakistan’s nuclear tests conducted in 1998.

All public and private sector institutions in the province will remain closed on the day, and the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) will suspend trading operations.

What happened on Youm-e-Takbeer?

This day commemorates the Chagai-I and Chagai-II series of nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998, in the Chaghi hills of Balochistan, making Pakistan the first Muslim country and seventh country in the world to have nuclear weapons.

It was done after India exploded nuclear bombs in 1974, and their effect on regional security that the tests was seen as necessary.

Youm-e-Takbeer is seen as a moment of national pride, celebrated to honor the country’s scientific and defense advancements. Each year, the day is marked by ceremonies, political speeches, and media tributes recognizing the efforts of scientists and leadership behind the achievement.
