ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Saifullah Abro resigned from the Senate after voting in favour of the 27th Constitutional Amendment bill in the Upper House on Monday.
Addressing the house after the voting, Abro said that I came here to vote for [COAS] Asim Munir, not for anyone else, adding that the Pakistan armed forces inflicted a humiliating defeat on India in May this year.
Announcing his resignation from his Senate membership, the Senator cited his potential disqualification for defying the party’s policy on the amendment. He also criticised his party colleagues for their lack of support during a difficult personal time, especially during his wife’s arrest.
He revealed that during the period of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, his wife was among the 10 members of his family who were arrested, saying that his party did not support him during that phase.
Furthermore, he stated the significance of this diplomatic recognition, stating that the level of respect shown to Field Marshal by the US was unprecedented, surpassing that given to any prime minister in the past.
Earlier, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar moved the 59-clause bill into the Upper House of the Parliament, which was approved with a two-thirds majority. After sailing through the Senate, the government will now present the bill in the National Assembly for voting.
No member voted against it, as the opposition opted to boycott. However, from the opposition benches, the Awami National Party (ANP) senators, PTI-backed Saifullah Abro and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s (JUI-F) Ahmed Khan voted in favour of the amendment.
