ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Pakistan has called for a more inclusive, representative, and reformed multilateral system to address complex global challenges as the need of the hour on the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.

Addressing a UN’s 80th anniversary ceremony in Islamabad on Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said that the world is currently grappling with issues such as growing instability, widening inequality, and a lack of trust in global institutions, even though these institutions were established to safeguard global peace and prosperity.

He said that unresolved conflicts, such as Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine, are still depriving millions of people of their right to self-determination

Climate change and the flaws in the global financial architecture have deepened inequality and debt crises in developing countries.

“Pakistan is deeply committed to the principles and purposes of the UN Charter. We believe that an inclusive, representative and reformed multilateral system is the only guarantee of shared security and prosperity.”

The Foreign Minister explained that reforming the multilateral system is not a negation of the UN but the only way to strengthen and make it effective.

“The UN must continuously evolve, address structural weaknesses, give a stronger voice to developing countries, and deliver equitable outcomes for all countries.”

Ishaq Dar said that Pakistan has always recognized the central role of the UN in international relations and has played an active and positive role in the areas of peacekeeping missions, humanitarian assistance, development cooperation and environmental sustainability.

“Pakistan is among the largest troop contributors to UN peacekeeping missions and as the host of the oldest UN mission, we consider UN peacekeeping missions as a key tool for global stability.”

The Foreign Minister, while highlighting Pakistan’s current tenure as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for 2025-26, said that Islamabad is committed to working with all member states to promote peace, justice and international cooperation.

Ishaq Dar further said that the unanimous adoption of Resolution 2788 during Pakistan’s presidency of the Security Council in July this year reflects Pakistan’s desire to make the principles of the UN Charter the focus of global diplomacy for the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

He termed the UN80 Initiative launched by the UN Secretary-General as a timely step and said that it is an important effort to modernize the institution and make it more responsive and representative in line with current global realities.

He stressed that the priorities and fundamental interests of developing countries must remain at the heart of the UN agenda, especially in the context of achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

He warned that the UN’s development and humanitarian role should not be undermined in the name of cost-cutting.

‘On the occasion of United Nations Day, Pakistan reiterates its enduring commitment to the multilateral system and the lofty goals of the UN Charter, namely peace, development and human dignity.’
