ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): In a new development, the Azad Kashmir government has decided to build a modern international airport in Mirpur as part of a major development project in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

The project is being described as a major step towards providing modern air facilities to the people of the region and improving travel connectivity for millions of Pakistanis and Kashmiris living abroad.

According to official sources, the construction of the new airport is expected to begin during the current financial year.

The project will not only improve air connectivity at the regional level but will also prove to be a milestone in the development infrastructure of Azad Kashmir.

Technical feasibility and site selection

According to a spokesperson for the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), the technical feasibility process for the airport has been formally initiated.

It includes identifying a suitable site and a detailed review of various technical aspects. The spokesperson said, “The Pakistan Airports Authority has initiated the process of technical feasibility and site selection, and the initial technical works are likely to be completed by December 2025.”

According to officials, a groundbreaking ceremony for Mirpur International Airport will be held once the preliminary feasibility and design approvals are completed. After this, the construction activities will officially begin, making one of the most-awaited development projects of the region a reality.

Regional connectivity and improvement in the economy:

Official sources said that the construction of the new airport will provide direct air connectivity to the citizens of Azad Kashmir, especially the Kashmiris living abroad. After this project, they will not have to depend on the distant airports of Islamabad or other provinces.

It has been further said that the establishment of Mirpur International Airport will improve the local economy, increase employment opportunities, and create new prospects for future investment.

According to a spokesperson for the Pakistan Airports Authority, “The authority has started ground preparation and has set a target to complete all technical studies and approvals by the end of 2025.”
