KARACHI (Kashmir English): The Sindh government introduced the Solar Home Systems project to provide clean energy solutions for low-income households across four districts.
The formal event took place in Khairpur, where lawmakers, senior officials, and beneficiaries came together to start distributing the program, which the Sindh Energy Department operates through its Special Initiatives for Renewable Energy program.
The project will distribute 275,000 solar home systems to recipients without any cost. The project includes the distribution of 132,000 off-grid solar kits, which provide electricity to areas without any power supply, and 143,000 on-grid systems, which serve households with electricity connections but unreliable power delivery.
The Sindh Rural Support Organisation handles distribution operations by verifying beneficiaries and delivering services throughout different districts. The launch ceremony in Khairpur saw provincial lawmakers Barrister Halar Khan Wassan and Barrister Sheeraz Shaukat Rajpar, together with former MNA Nawab Khan Wassan, present solar kits to chosen recipients.
The officials created this program to help people stop depending on expensive and unreliable grid electricity because Pakistan currently experiences power shortages and increasing energy prices.
The country has increasingly turned toward decentralized solar solutions in recent years because solar panel prices have decreased while both urban and rural areas require backup power solutions.
The event took place with attendance from Additional Secretary Energy Sindh Junaid Iqbal Khan, Deputy Commissioner Khairpur Altaf Chachar, SRSO representatives, district administration officials, and media members.
The launch events took place at the same time in Larkana and Qambar Shahdadkot, and Shikarpur, where approximately 100 beneficiaries received solar kits in each district.
