Earlier today, the federal government approved the deployment of the Pakistan Army in Rawalpindi under Article 245 of the Constitution to assist the civil administration in maintaining law and order.
According to the notification, “three companies of the Pakistan Army will be deployed in Rawalpindi for six months to support the district administration in security-related duties.”
The deployment comes following a request from the Punjab Home Department in Lahore, which sought military assistance from the federal government for Rawalpindi.
As per the notification, army personnel will serve in support of the civil administration and assist them in keeping peace and public order in the district.
The Constitution of Pakistan, in Article 245, establishes the constitutional framework in which the Armed Forces can, and do, intervene in the affairs of civil society, at the behest of the Federal government.
