RAWALPINDI (Kashmir English): The federal government has approved the deployment of the Army in Rawalpindi under Article 245 of the Constitution to assist the civil administration in maintaining law and order.
According to the notification details, three companies of the Pakistan Army will be deployed in Rawalpindi for six months to support the district administration in security-related duties.
The deployment was called for by the Punjab Home Department, which asked the federal government for military help in Rawalpindi.
The agreement will allow army personnel to serve in support of the civil administration and assist them in keeping peace and public order in the district.
The Constitution of Pakistan, in Article 245, establishes the constitutional framework in which the Armed Forces can, and do, intervene in the affairs of civil society, at the behest of the Federal government.
The provision has been used in the past for deployments that would assist civil authorities in times of major law-and-order or security events.
